Satyendranath (S. N.) Bose

Born 1894, Calcutta, India. Master's in Mixed Mathematics, Calcutta University, 1915, then in new physics department. Lecturer in Physics, 1917-21. Reader in Physics, Dacca University1921-26. Spent 1924-26 in Europe (Paris with Marie Curie, visited Einstein in Berlin). Professor of Physics, later Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dacca University, 1926-45. Professor of Physics and Dean, Khaira University, 1945. Head of Indian Physical Society. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London, 1958.

Derived with Saha the Saha-Bose equation of state for a nonideal gas, 1918. 1920 derived Rydberg law in the old quantum theory. 1924 derived Planck's radiation law using a photon rather than matter oscillator picture, introduced Bose statistics to account for photon identity (Bose statistics extended to gases by Einstein). Later work on total reflection by the ionosphere (1938), the Lorentz group (1939), experimental work on crystallography, fluorescence, thermoluminescence, theoretical work on general relativity.
