Part-time student positions#
The Physics Department is looking for motivated students to assist our computing team. We run a large analysis facility with more than one petabyte of disk and several thousand computing cores that physicists from Wisconsin and around the world use to study data from the Large Hadron Collider. We work with peers at universities across the US and Europe to provide dozens of petabytes and millions of hours of computing each day.#
Students will have the opportunity to participate in every aspect of running a large and busy datacenter. Interested students may perform any of the following tasks:#
- Support users of our computing, storage and infrastructure services.
- Maintain cluster and networking hardware.
- Assist in the operation of web, DNS, mail and other critical infrastructure services.
- Manage Drupal and edit website content.
- Desktop setup (Linux, Mac, Windows) and printer configuration.
- Manage and upgrade Linux servers using Kickstart, Puppet, and Yum.
- Troubleshoot Condor analysis jobs.
- Maintain servers in our Hadoop distributed file system (HDFS) cluster.
- Expand our monitoring and write scripts in shell and Python to automate any of these tasks.
Hours, tasks and pay are flexible and will reflect experience and interest. The position will last through the 2013 school year. To apply, send an email to jobs@hep.wisc.edu with your resume and a brief description of your background and interests in computing (text or PDF preferred).#
